hemming birds boutique is opening in May – shop update #1

So it turns out that starting a small handmade sewing business is a lot more work than we thought (anyone who has done this before can I’m sure attest to this).  Jennifer and I have been working hard to get hemming bird boutique up and running and we are getting close.  In fact, we recently announced on Facebook that we will be opening in May!!  Very exciting.  The secret is, our opening will be in a less-than-typical fashion.  But that is all I’m saying about that for now.

As our “grand opening” nears we want to share with you what we’ve been up to for the last few months.  We are going to post a weekly update leading up to our shop opening.

We’ll start off with design and inspiration.

For a few years now Jennifer and I have been working on starting a small business selling handcrafted items.  A few babies and many nieces, nephews, and friends’ babies later we realized that we really love sewing beautiful accessories for little ones!

In January my little one (the sassy Miss H) picked up a handmade purse I had made, swung it over her shoulder like a little lady, and proceeded to toddle around the house wearing it.  Honestly, I’m not sure where she learned that – since she’s been born the only “purse” that I’ve been swinging over my shoulder is a diaper bag.

The proverbial lightbulb went off when we saw Miss H tripping over the adult-sized purse –  why not design purses for little ones to play with?  A quick search on Etsy and around the internet proved that this was an area that was not over saturated.

A few rounds of testing prototypes later here they are – our first two hemming birds items.  Meet the June Little Girl Purse (left) and the Jane Little Girl Tote (right).

When we launch in May we will have three exterior fabrics available (Blue Polka dot (above), mint green (below), and a dark pink (from Rashida Coleman-Hale’s Koi collection).  Here are some more pictures of the green and blue (note: we don’t have any pictures yet of the third color, and also because of safety concerns we will not have magnetic snaps on the bags).
